Oahu - Attractions and Things to Do

Oahu offers more of everything than the other islands combined. Visitors are drawn to the island by its signature attractions — Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, the Polynesian Cultural Center and its super-sized collection of scenic golf courses. Shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities here far above  those of neighbor islands.

Some of Oahu's most popular attractions are located outside the city. Hanauma Bay, a world-renown snorkeling destination, is a short drive from Waikiki along the southeast shore of the island. Sea Life Park, with its brilliant array of interactive marine life attractions, is located above Makapu'u Beach not far from Hanauma Bay.

The Polynesian Cultural Center, a unique and perennially popular attraction, is located in La'ie, more than an hour's drive from Honolulu, near the North Shore. Kualoa Ranch, past Kaneohe on Kahekili Highway, is another favorite destination. The Arizona Memorial, the biggest visitor draw in the state, is located close to Honolulu at Pearl Harbor. Ko Olina, the island's newest resort community, and Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park, with its amazing array of water features, are located near Kapolei in Central Oahu.

Take a walking tour of downtown Honolulu or Waikiki and get a feel for this state's colorful past.  You want to take a drive, Halew'iwa, on the North Shore, is a good bet.  A surfers' Mecca, it has retained the character of its more than 100-year history. And for sheer beauty, you can't top a drive through the mountains on any of Oahu's three scenic highways.

You can drive the island in a day, but that would be only touching the surface. It'll take two, maybe three days to get a good look. It’s a springboard to individual exploration and unique experiences. Remember, every side road is an adventure just waiting to happen...

Diamond Head
The most famous volcanic crater in the world is Diamond Head, located on the South-east Coast of O'ahu at the end of Waikiki overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Diamond Head Trail is 1 ¾ miles to the rim and takes about 1 ½ hours. There is NO shade so schedule an early hike BRING WATER and a flashlight (for the tunnel) Bathrooms available at the trailhead.

Matsumotos Shave Ice
Located off Kamehameha Hwy. in Haleiwa up on the North Shore. It's by far the most-celebrated shave ice place in the Islands. And for good reason. This must-stop place for tourists and locals has been in business since 1951. And it still serves about 1,000 shave ice cones a day in flavors ranging from mango to green apple to tangerine. Locals know to add ice cream and azuki beans for a full-on, after-the-beach treat.

Ron Artis Family Band
Broken surfboards provide the canvas for Ron Artis, by his gallery in the town of Haleiwa.  His large family plays music together in their band and they will play some great music for you in their converted home.

Giovanni's Shrimp Truck
A shrimp truck stop is a must while visiting the North Shore.  Giovanni's was the only one we tried, so I can't tell you if it's the best one, but it sure is tasty. The shrimp was juicy and garlicky.  We heard Macky's is very good as well but didn't try it.  Don't be creeped out by the look of the trucks!  It's really good!

Laniakea - also known as Turtle Beach
Laniakea, Oahu, Hawaii, is without question the best place in the world to see marine turtles up close. Hawaiian green sea turtles crawl ashore almost daily to bask amid crowds of tourists and surfers, providing a unique turtle experience and unmatched photo opportunities.  These turtles are huge, some can weigh up to 400 lbs and live 80 years.

Leonards Bakery
Leonard's is a tiny little hole in the wall Portuguese Bakery on Kapahulu Avenue in Honolulu.  They are famous for their hot fresh malasadas.  A warm pastry pocket filled with custard - you really don't want to miss out on these!

Dole Plantation
Always a fun place to visit for a tour of the plantation or to just shop around.  The world-famous DoleWhip' is a refreshing frozen treat to cool you down.

The Byodo-In Temple
The Byodo-in Temple is a place of awesome beauty, located near Kaneohe, Hawaii. It is a scale replica of a temple in Uji Japan built over 900 years ago. It's beautiful architecture, the graceful gardens and the backdrop of the Koolau Ridge will leave you with a spirit of inner peace and serenity.
